Wedding

Wedding

Every gown individually inspected, hand-cleaned with non-toxic methods, and preserved for the decades ahead. A wedding dress is the most photographed and least worn garment most people will ever own. It is worn once, for one day, and then it needs to last a lifetime. BLANC provides wedding dress cleaning and preservation in London for brides who understand that a gown worth thousands deserves more than a standard dry cleaning cycle. Why wedding dresses cannot be cleaned like other garments A wedding gown is a construction of layers — silk, tulle, lace, boning, beadwork, and hand-stitched embellishment, often assembled from several different materials that each respond differently to cleaning. A single cycle that suits the outer silk may damage the beadwork. Perchloroethylene, the solvent used by most conventional dry cleaners, can dull delicate fabrics and lift hand-applied detail. The dress requires a method built around its specific construction, not a standard process applied to everything. The stains you can see and the stains you cannot Champagne, wine, and cake are visible. The stains that cause the most long-term damage are the ones that are invisible on the day. Perspiration, body oils, and clear champagne oxidise slowly over months, turning yellow or brown long after the wedding. A gown that looks clean when it is put away can develop staining in storage. This is why professional cleaning before preservation matters — the treatment removes the organic residue that would otherwise oxidise and set permanently. How BLANC cleans a wedding gown Every gown moves through the same controlled sequence, with the method adjusted to the specific dress at each stage: Inspection: Before any cleaning is considered, the gown is examined in full — the fibre content of each layer, how the dress is constructed, the type and placement of any beadwork or lace, and every stain, both the visible marks and the areas where perspiration or champagne is likely to have soaked in without showing yet. This inspection determines everything that follows. Documentation: The condition of the gown is recorded before treatment begins, including the location of each mark and any existing wear or weakness in the fabric. This record protects the client and gives the specialist a reference to work against, so nothing is missed and the outcome can be checked against the starting condition. Method selection: A cleaning method is chosen for the specific dress rather than applied from a default. Non-toxic wet cleaning with biodegradable detergents suits most gowns; liquid CO₂ is used for the most delicate or heavily structured pieces. The temperature and agitation are set to the most fragile element in the garment — if the beadwork cannot tolerate a setting, that setting is not used, even on the silk it is attached to. You can learn more about our eco-friendly dry cleaning machines. Cleaning: The gown is cleaned using the selected method, with no perchloroethylene at any stage. Because the method is matched to the fabric rather than forced onto it, the cleaning lifts staining and residue without stripping the silk of its natural sheen or lifting hand-applied detail from the surface. Hand finishing: Beadwork, lace, and structured elements are finished by hand rather than machine-pressed. A machine applies uniform pressure across the whole garment; a specialist works section by section, shaping the bodice, settling the layers of the skirt, and pressing around embellishment without crushing it. This is the stage that returns the gown to how it looked before it was worn. Preservation that lasts decades, not months Cleaning is only half of preservation. After cleaning, the gown is prepared for long-term storage using acid-free tissue to support the folds and prevent creasing, inside a breathable box that protects against moisture and light. Plastic is never used — it traps humidity and accelerates yellowing. Stored correctly, in a cool, dark, stable environment, a preserved gown can be opened decades later in wearable condition, ready for a daughter, a vow renewal, or simply to be kept. Alterations and restoration BLANC also handles wedding dress alterations and restoration. Hemming, taking in, bustle additions, and repairs to damaged lace or beadwork are carried out by skilled hands. If a vintage or heirloom gown needs restoration before it can be worn again, we assess what is recoverable and advise honestly on the outcome. Our alterations and repairs service covers gowns as well as everyday garments. Book a wedding dress consultation Bring your gown to our Chelsea studio, where our bridal specialists are based, or arrange a collection from your London address. Every gown is quoted individually after inspection, because construction, fabric, and condition vary significantly between dresses.
