What leather needs

Leather needs a different kind of care

Leather is skin, and the wrong treatment ruins it permanently. Its grain, finish and natural oils react quickly to heat, water and chemicals.
Most cleaning methods are not built to protect the grain, finish and natural oils of leather. The damage usually comes from one of three things.

That is why BLANC does not treat leather like any other garment. Each piece is inspected, the leather type is identified and the method is chosen before any cleaning begins.

Leather is damaged most often by one of three things, and the damage is usually permanent:
  • PERC. Strips natural oils, causing stiffness and cracking at fold points.
  • Water. Leaves tidemarks that set permanently into the surface as it dries.
  • Heat. Warps the shape and can shrink the material irreversibly.
Caught early, much of this can be treated. Bring a piece in as soon as you notice a mark, a stiff patch or a change in colour. Book online in a few minutes, or arrange a collection from across London.
By leather type

Every leather type needs a different method

What works on cowhide can damage suede. A specialist identifies the leather before choosing any product or technique.
Every piece is cleaned by hand, on the surface only. No bag goes through a machine cycle, and nothing is immersed in water or solvent. Once cleaned, the leather is reconditioned to replace the oils the cleaning process removes. What restores calfskin may lift the finish on patent leather, so each type is treated on its own terms. For everyday care between cleans, read our how to care for leather guide.
  • Full-grain and top-grain. Cleaned gently to protect the natural surface and finish.
  • Suede and nubuck. Cleaned dry, with specialist brushes and erasers, to lift marks without flattening the nap.
  • Exotic and specialty leathers. Each assessed on its own terms before any cleaning

Restoration

Cleaning is one thing. Restoration is another.

Cleaning removes dirt, staining and residue. Restoration goes further and addresses the damage that has built up over months or years of use.
  • Colour restoration. Faded or scuffed areas matched and built up gradually by hand, so the finish looks even and not painted.
  • Edge and corner repair. Worn edges cleaned, sealed and refinished to extend the life of the bag.
  • Stitching repair. Broken or fraying stitching re-sewn with thread matched to the original.
A well-made leather bag is almost always worth restoring rather than replacing. The leather often outlasts the stitching, the hardware and the lining, and restoration can extend a bag’s working life by years at a fraction of the cost of a replacement. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard turnaround is 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the leather type and the work required. Restoration involving colour matching or hardware replacement may take longer, and this is confirmed after inspection.

Often, yes. Surface scuffs and minor scratches can frequently be improved through cleaning, reconditioning and colour restoration. Deeper scratches that have broken through the finish are harder to address. A specialist assesses the depth and advises on a realistic outcome before any work is agreed.

Cleaning by hand costs £72.00 for a small bag, £81.00 for a medium bag and £90.00 for a large bag. Restoration work, such as colour matching, edge repair or hardware replacement, is confirmed after inspection. See the price guide above or call 020 8004 2630.

Often, if treated before the leather has been dried with heat. Water staining and tidemarks can frequently be reduced or blended through professional cleaning and reconditioning. Leather that has dried out and stiffened may need restoration to recover its suppleness. Bring the item in as soon as possible

Yes. Suede and nubuck mark easily and respond poorly to water, so they are cleaned dry with specialist brushes, cleaners and protectors matched to the finish. Whether it is suede shoes, a nubuck bag or a suede jacket, each item is assessed individually.

Yes. Every bag is inspected before cleaning, and the method is matched to the leather type and finish. Cleaning is by hand and lifts dirt without stripping natural oils, followed by reconditioning. No bag goes through a machine cycle
