BLANC Tailoring

Good alterations are invisible

Any tailor can take a garment in or up. A skilled one considers how each change affects the whole piece.

Tailoring the whole garment

Shortening jacket sleeves also moves the button relative to the cuff. Done without adjusting the proportion, the length is right and the jacket still looks wrong.

A tailor assesses the garment as a structure. Taking in at the waist means redistributing the fit across the side seams, the back panel and the darts, so it sits evenly when worn. A tailor who takes in only the side seams leaves a fit that pulls at the front.

Alterations that make clothes last

A garment that does not fit puts stress on the cloth every time it is worn:
  • Shoulder pull strains the seam with every movement.
  • A dragging hem catches underfoot and wears through.
  • Over-long sleeves crease permanently at the wrist.

A proper alteration spreads the fit evenly. Alteration is maintenance, not vanity.

One operation

Cleaning and alterations under the same roof

Most tailors do not clean. Most dry cleaners do not alter. The client shuttles a garment between two services and waits twice. BLANC handles both. This is a structural difference, not a convenience.

Tailoring and Dry Cleaning in One Booking

A suit can be taken in at the waist and cleaned in a single booking, and a dress hemmed and returned freshly pressed. Our tailors and cleaning team work in one operation, to one standard and one timeline, so nothing waits in a queue at a second provider.

Collected garments are altered and cleaned at our Atelier, where tailoring and cleaning sit side by side, and returned to your door ready to wear.

Hand-finished tailoring

Tailoring that fits and lasts.

Every alteration starts with an assessment. A tailor tells you what is possible before any work is agreed, and sets hems to the shoes you will wear.
  • Assessed first: You know what is possible before work starts.
  • One booking: Altered and cleaned without a second provider.
  • Invisible finish: Hand-finished so the work does not show.
Simple work, such as a hem or a button, is usually completed within three to five working days. Complex work, such as re-lining a jacket or reshaping a gown, may take one to two weeks, and the timeline is confirmed at the consultation. If you have a deadline, tell us when you book.

Alteration Consultations at Every Studio

Every BLANC studio has an in-house tailor for consultations and drop-offs, with Chelsea by appointment. Our tailors handle hems, waist and body adjustments, sleeve and shoulder work, re-lining, seam and moth hole repairs, zips and buttons, and wedding and occasion wear. Bring the garment and, for hems, the shoes you plan to wear with it, so the fitting can be done on the day.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Simple work, such as a hem or a button replacement, is usually completed within three to five working days. More complex alterations, such as re-lining a jacket, reshaping a structured dress or adjusting a wedding gown, may take one to two weeks depending on the garment and the detail involved. Turnaround is confirmed at the consultation. If you have a deadline, tell us when you book.

In most cases, yes. Taking in is straightforward because it works with the available fabric. Letting out depends on the seam allowance left by the manufacturer. Some garments have generous allowances, others have almost none. A tailor assesses what is possible during the consultation and advises honestly before any work is agreed.

Bring the garment and, if relevant, the shoes you plan to wear with it, since trouser and dress hems are set to a specific shoe height. If you want the piece to match the fit of another garment you own, bring that too. Wear the undergarments you would normally wear with the piece for an accurate fitting. Our how to care for leather guide covers keeping leather shoes in shape between alterations.

Yes. Wedding gowns and occasion wear are handled at the specialist Bridal Studio at Chelsea, 85 Lower Sloane Street, SW1W 8DA, by appointment. Hemming, taking in, bustle additions and repairs to lace and embellishment are all covered. Occasion wear is quoted individually after inspection because the construction and fabric vary significantly between garments. If your gown also needs cleaning or preservation, see our wedding dress cleaning service.

Yes. Because BLANC handles both under the same roof, alterations and cleaning are combined in a single booking. The combined job follows the alteration timeline rather than the cleaning one, so allow three to five working days for simple work. For collected garments, the work takes place at the BLANC Atelier, 16 Gorst Road, NW10 6LE, where the tailoring room and the cleaning facility operate together, and the garment is returned to your door ready to wear.

Every BLANC studio has an in-house tailor. Days vary by studio, so check the tailoring hours for your nearest studio before you visit, or book a fitting and we will confirm the slot. Chelsea tailoring hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, by appointment. You can also schedule a collection at blancliving.co or call at 020 8004 2630.
