PERC is dangerous for our health and that of our children, pets and our environment. We are exposed to PERC via our skin when wearing clothes which it has been used on. We also risk exposure through air and water, which it gets into via the dry cleaning process.
Wet cleaning removes this risk of exposure to toxic perchloroylene. It also has the associated benefits of resulting in a softer, fresher garment, which has been treated in a more gentle, caring way. Wet cleaning has been used for decades in the US and France, where PERC is banned, as well as some other European countries.
BLANC uses the Electrolux Wet Cleaning System, which is approved by Woolmark and does not use solvent based cleaners such as PERC. This means that the water used ends up harmless as opposed to toxic, and is heated on demand which reduces energy usage. Steam resulting from this process is used in other parts of the cleaning process. All settings clean at much lower temperatures than with dry cleaning which involves very high temperatures. This is why we do not melt buttons and sequins as experienced in some dry cleaning processes.
The first step in the journey is the stain 'spotting' station where stains are assessed and treated by hand using a range of non-toxic agents.
Next, the garment is put into our intelligent specialised cleaning machine. This has a delicate and sophisticated mechanical action to ensure fibres are respected and items can be cleaned safely- a bit like a 'hand wash'.
The appropriate cycle, biodegradable detergent and water is selected for the specific fabric, be it wool, cashmere, silk, lace etc. The required amount of water to maintain the integrity of the garment is then programmed to be aspired from the machine.
The garment is then dried and ironed or pressed by hand. This process involves drying in gentle dryers and on special lines, steam shaping on special machines to give the best finish for the individual item, and hand finishing.
Finally garments are checked before being packed carefully ready to return to you.
